In Sweden, Nelly lived in a small apartment. She worked by translating books. She wrote poems about the grief of her people. Her words used many images like stars and dust. Her writing helped people understand the tragedy of the Holocaust. She was also close friends with the poet Paul Celan. They both understood the hardships of being Jewish artists.

Nelly's work was very important. In 1966, she won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This is a very big honor for writers. She said her work represented the tragedy of the Jewish people. A city in Germany even named a prize after her. They also made an opera based on her play, Eli. She died in 1970 in Sweden.
