Sylvia Plath was a famous American poet.

Sylvia Plath

She wrote a poem called "Daddy" in 1962. This poem is part of a group called the "October poems." These poems show a lot of anger. Plath felt held back by her parents and society. She also felt hurt by her ex-husband, Ted Hughes.

The poem uses a special way of rhyming. Many words end with an "oo" sound. This makes the poem sound like a nursery rhyme. But the poem is very dark. Plath uses metaphors, which are symbols, to tell her story. She compares her father to a Nazi soldier. She compares herself to a Jewish person. This helps her show how she felt trapped.

Some people think the poem is about her father, Otto Plath. He died when she was eight years old. Others think the poem is a break-up letter. They believe the "vampire" in the poem is her ex-husband. Critics say the poem is about a woman finding her own voice. It shows her struggle against men in power. Today, many people still study this poem in school.
