Oz's life was full of hard work and learning. He grew up in Jerusalem and later moved to a kibbutz, which is a type of farm community. At the age of 14, he joined Kibbutz Hulda and changed his name to Oz. In Hebrew, the word Oz means "courage." He was not a natural farmer, but he worked hard on the land. The kibbutz gave him one day a week to focus on his writing. Later, he balanced his time between teaching and writing. He even worked as a waiter in the dining hall on Saturdays.
