He was born in Germany as Helmut Ostermann in 1923. His family lived in a town called Beckum. In 1933, his family moved to Mandatory Palestine. This happened after Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany.

His family left many relatives behind in Germany. Those relatives died during the Holocaust. Avnery later changed his name to honor his brother. His brother died while serving in the British Army in 1941.

As a young man, Avnery became a soldier. He fought in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.

He served in the Givati Brigade and a unit called Samson's Foxes. During the war, he saw many things that changed his mind. He saw villages where people had just fled. He noticed fires and cookers left behind. These sights helped him understand that the Palestinian people were real. He was wounded twice during his time in the military. He finished his service in the summer of 1949.

Avnery also worked as a very famous journalist. In 1950, he bought a magazine called HaOlam HaZeh.

He used the magazine to investigate corruption. He wanted to report news without fear or bias. His writing style was very strong and new for Israel. The magazine was sometimes in trouble for its reports. Avnery even faced physical attacks because of his work. He survived two attempts on his life. He also had both hands and fingers broken in an assault in 1953.

He also spent time as a leader in the government. Avnery was elected to the Knesset twice. The Knesset is the place where leaders make laws in Israel. He served from 1965 to 1974 and again from 1979 to 1981.

He often used his position to criticize the people in power. He wanted to change how the country was run. He even started his own political parties. One of these was called HaOlam HaZeh – Koah Hadash.

Avnery spent much of his life working for peace. In 1982, he did something very brave. He crossed the front lines in Beirut to meet Yasser Arafat.
