He was born in Marrakesh, Morocco, in 1952. His family was part of an Orthodox Jewish group. They lived in a special area called a mellah. In 1963, his family moved to Israel. They lived in a small wooden hut in Beersheba. At first, the city was very poor and dry. Vanunu grew up there and later studied many subjects. He eventually studied physics and philosophy at a university.

Vanunu later found a job at a special place. This was the Negev Nuclear Research Center in the Negev Desert.

He worked there as a nuclear plant technician. He started this job in February 1977. He had to follow very strict rules about secrets. He promised not to visit certain countries after his job ended. He even had to take special flights to North America. He was very good at his work and earned a high salary. He studied physics, chemistry, and math during his training.

As time passed, Vanunu began to feel differently about his country. He did not like the idea of big weapons. He also felt that some people were treated better than others in Israel. He joined a group called the Movement for the Advancement of Peace. He also spent time with the Israeli Communist Party. In 1985, he lost his job for a short time. When he went back to work, he decided to take action. He secretly brought a camera into the facility. He took 57 photos of the work being done there.

In 1986, Vanunu shared what he knew with the news in Britain. This act made him a whistleblower. A whistleblower is someone who tells the public about secrets. Because of this, an agency called Mossad took him from Britain. They lured him to Italy and then took him to Israel. He was tried in a secret court with closed doors. Vanunu spent 18 years in prison for his actions. He spent more than 11 of those years in solitary confinement. This means he was kept in a small room alone.

People around the world have many different ideas about him. Some call him a hero for his courage.

An American man named Daniel Ellsberg called him a hero of the nuclear era. In 1987, he won the Right Livelihood Award. However, the government in Israel calls him a traitor. After he was released in 2004, he still had many hard rules. He could not travel easily or speak to many people. He was arrested again in 2007 and 2010 for breaking these rules. His story shows how one person can change how the world sees secrets.
