He taught at the University of Chicago for many years. Strauss studied very old books. He looked at writers from Greece and the Middle Ages. He thought these writers were very clever. He believed they used a secret way of writing. This was called esoteric writing. They hid their true ideas behind plain words. They did this to stay safe from harm. They also wanted to teach only those who were ready. Strauss called this a "great conversation." He wanted people to talk across time. He studied how reason and faith work together. His ideas still make people talk today. Many scholars study his work in many fields.
