Pieter Geyl was a famous historian from the Netherlands. He was born in Dordrecht in 1887. He studied at the University of Leiden. Later, he moved to London. He worked for a newspaper there. He also taught at the University of London. In 1935, he returned home. He became a professor at the University of Utrecht.

During World War II, life was very hard. German soldiers occupied the Netherlands. They took Geyl as a hostage. He spent thirteen months in a camp called Buchenwald. He was later held in another camp. He was finally released in 1944 for health reasons.

Geyl had many big ideas about history. He thought history was like a long debate. He believed people see the past in different ways. This is because every age has its own views. He often argued with other historians. He did not like simple rules for history. He wanted people to look at all the facts. He wrote many books to share his ideas. He died in 1966.
