He was born in Kiev to a Jewish family. He studied law and math at a university. Later, he moved to France. He lived in Paris until he died in 1938.

Shestov wrote about big ideas. He looked at religion and science. He also studied writers like Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky. He wrote a large book called Athens and Jerusalem. In this book, he talked about freedom and God.

Shestov had a unique way of thinking. He did not like to rely only on reason. Reason is a way to find truths using logic. He felt reason could not solve the biggest mysteries of life. He thought some things were beyond what we can prove.

One of his main ideas was that nothing is impossible. He believed people should resist truths that limit them. He said that true faith can exist even during doubt. His work was called "anti-philosophy" by some scholars. He wanted people to find freedom through their own deep thoughts.
