He was born in 1795. He wanted to find the truth about the past. Before him, many history books were just lists of facts. Ranke wanted more than that. He believed history should be told "as it really happened."

Ranke changed how people study history. He used primary sources to do his work. These are original records like diaries, letters, and government papers. He did not just read other people's books. He looked at the real items from that time. He even sent his students to find old records in many places.

He taught at the University of Berlin for nearly fifty years. In his classes, he used a seminar method. This was a way for students to study together. They would talk about the sources they found. Ranke wrote many big books about England, France, and Germany. He also wrote about the history of the church. He was so well known that he was given a special title in 1865. He lived to be 90 years old.
