Political history is the study of how power works. It looks at leaders, laws, and big ideas. It also studies voters and political parties. For a long time, most history focused on great leaders. These experts studied the big decisions made by powerful people.

In the 19th century, a man named Leopold von Ranke wrote about politics in a new way. He changed how experts look at old sources. Later, things began to change again. In the 1960s and 1970s, new ideas grew. Many scholars started to study social history instead.

Social history looks at ordinary people. It looks at how race, class, and gender affect life. In the United States, this was called "new political history." These scholars studied why people voted. They used math and data to learn about religion and where people came from. In France, a group called the Annales School focused on geography and money. They looked at slow changes over a long time. Today, political history is still important. It helps us understand how our world is run.
