Long ago, thinkers had big ideas about power. Friedrich Ratzel was a German geographer. He thought a nation was like a living thing. He said nations needed more space to grow. This idea was used to justify unfair actions in the past.

Another thinker was Halford Mackinder. He had a theory about the Heartland. He believed the person who controlled the center of the world would rule it. This idea helped shape how leaders thought during the Cold War.

For a while, this study slowed down. But it became active again in the late 1970s. Now, it is a very busy field. People study many new things. They look at how the internet affects power. They also study how groups fight for the planet.
