Philosophy of geography

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Geography is the study of our world. Some people study the ideas behind it. This is called the philosophy of geography. They ask big questions about space and place. They also ask how we see the world.

People have debated these ideas for a long time. Richard Hartshorne wrote a major book in 1939. He studied the work of Alfred Hettner. Hettner was a German geographer.

John Kirtland Wright was another thinker. He used a new word in 1947. He called this study geosophy. This word refers to a broad study of geography.

Other thinkers wrote important books too. David Harvey wrote a book in 1969. Henri Lefebvre wrote a book in 1974. His work helped start a special group. This group is the Society for Philosophy and Geography.

Andrew Light and Jonathan Smith started this group in 1997. They also helped run a journal. A journal is a book with many studies. This journal helped people study the environment. It also helped people study cities. Now, many people work together to study space and place.
