Scientists study the universe as a whole. They often call it the cosmos. To them, the world is all space and time. It includes everything that was, is, and will be. They also look at matter and the laws of nature.

Thinkers also ask about different kinds of worlds. Some talk about possible worlds. These are ways things could have been. For example, a person could have won an election they lost. That is a possible world.

In religion, people have different views. Some see the world as a creation of God. Others think the world and God are the same. A person's set of beliefs about the world is called a worldview.

People study how the world began. This study is called cosmogony. Some also study how the world might end. This is called eschatology. We use the word "world" in many ways. It can mean the Earth or all people. It can even mean a world war.
