Environmental ethics

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

How should we treat our world? This is a big question. People study this in a field called environmental ethics. This field looks at how we protect nature. It also looks at how we use its resources.

There are many different ways to think about this. One way is called ecocentrism. This idea says nature has its own worth. It is valuable just because it exists. Some people call this "deep ecology." They believe the whole planet is like one big living thing.

Another way is called conservation ethics. This view focuses on how nature helps people. It looks at how we can use resources wisely. This helps make sure humans have what they need in the future.

Faith also plays a role. Some people believe a god made the world. They feel we must care for it. Others have used religion to say humans should use nature more. People have many different views. They wonder if we should stop using gas cars. They ask if we should save a species even if it is not useful to us. These are important questions to think about.
