Applied ethics

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

People often wonder about what is right or wrong. Applied ethics is a way to use those ideas in real life. It looks at how we act in our jobs and our world. This field grew fast in the early 1970s. It grew because of new tools and medical tools. Now, many jobs have rules to help people act well.

There are many different types of applied ethics. Bioethics looks at life sciences. It asks hard questions about health and research. Environmental ethics looks at the earth. It asks if companies should clean up pollution. Business ethics looks at how workers act at work.

Some thinkers use big ideas to find answers. One way is called consequentialism. This idea says an act is right if it has good results. Another way is called deontology. This idea says some acts are right or wrong on their own. This is true even if the results are bad. Some people use a way called casuistry. They do not start with big theories. They start by looking at the facts of one real case. This helps people with different beliefs agree on what to do.
