It helps doctors and nurses make good choices. They use special values to guide them. One value is autonomy. This means a patient has the right to choose their own care. Another value is beneficence. This means acting in the best interest of the patient. Doctors also follow non-maleficence, which means they should not cause harm. Finally, they use justice. This helps make sure care is shared fairly.

These ideas are very old. The Hippocratic Oath is a famous set of rules from long ago. In the 1800s, a man named Thomas Percival wrote a modern code. Many groups use these rules today to solve hard problems. For example, what happens when there are not enough machines to help everyone? Or how should we use new tools like gene editing? Medical ethics helps people think about these big questions. It looks at how doctors work with patients and families. It also helps different cultures respect each other's values.
