Medical ethics is a way to study right and wrong in medicine.

It helps doctors and scientists make good choices during hard times. Professionals use a set of values to guide their work. One value is autonomy, which means a patient can choose their own treatment. Another is beneficence, which means acting in a patient's best interest. There is also non-maleficence, which means not causing harm. Finally, justice helps people decide how to share medical resources fairly.

These four values help doctors and families work toward the same goal.

Sometimes these values can clash with each other. This creates a need for a hierarchy, or a special order of importance. A hierarchy helps people use the best moral judgment in tough spots. Medical ethics is very important when making decisions about involuntary treatment. It also covers how doctors talk to patients and their families.

This field includes practical work in hospitals and scholarly work in history. It even looks at how sociology and philosophy connect to medicine. Experts use these rules to handle issues like patient privacy and informed consent.

People have been thinking about these ideas for a very long time. The Hippocratic Oath is a famous set of principles from the fifth century BCE. In the 5th century, a code called Formula Comitis Archiatrorum was published. During the medieval period, Islamic scholars like Ishaq ibn Ali al-Ruhawi wrote about these topics. Jewish thinkers like Maimonides also shared important ideas. In 1803, an English doctor named Thomas Percival wrote a modern code. His work helped the American Medical Association create its own code in 1847.

History shows many moments where ethics were tested by new tools. In the 1960s, the invention of hemodialysis created a big question. There were not enough machines to treat every patient who needed one. This forced people to decide which patients should receive treatment first. In 1947, the Nuremberg Code was created to help with medical research. Later, the Declaration of Helsinki was written in 1964. Even recent things like gene editing raise new moral questions. We must think about how these tools affect future generations of people.

Medical ethics is also connected to culture and the law. Different cultures may value family decisions more than individual autonomy. This means doctors need to be sensitive to different ways of life. Ethics and law are related, but they are not the same thing. Often, ethics asks for a higher standard of behavior than the law does.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, these ideas were very important. Doctors had to think about sharing limited supplies like ventilators and masks. These big questions help keep medicine fair for everyone in the world.
