Macroethics and microethics

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

People use two different ways to think about right and wrong. These ideas are called macroethics and microethics. Macroethics is a type of applied ethics. It looks at very large issues in our world. It often uses big rules or principles to guide how people act. This helps guide many people at once.

Microethics is a different way to look at choices. This term was introduced by Paul Komesaroff in 1995. It focuses on small, local moments in our daily lives. Most of these choices do not come from long arguments. Instead, they happen through quick feelings and talking to others. These tiny moments add up over time. They create the big ethical landscape where we live.

These two ideas come from different thinkers and history. The word macroethics was coined in the late 20th century. Komesaroff built his ideas on the work of other philosophers. He looked at the ideas of Edmund Husserl. He also looked at the work of Emmanuel Levinas. These thinkers helped explain how we relate to one another.

We can see these ideas working in a hospital. Macroethics might involve big questions about life and death. It might look at the sacredness of life itself. Microethics looks at the small details between a doctor and a patient. A doctor might watch a patient's facial expressions. They might notice a person's posture or tone of voice. They also consider a family's personal values and needs.

Both ways of thinking are needed to do good work. A researcher must follow big societal rules. If they only use microethics, their work might hurt society. But macroethics alone can feel too far away from real life. Drug designers must think about big goals for health. They also must think about the specific needs of one patient. These two ways of thinking work together in many jobs.
