Macroethics and microethics

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

People use two ways to think about right and wrong. These ways are macroethics and microethics.

Macroethics looks at big ideas. It uses rules for many people. It thinks about large issues in society. For example, doctors might think about the meaning of life. They may use big rules to guide their work.

Microethics looks at small moments. Paul Komesaroff spoke about this idea. It is about how we act with others every day. Most of these choices happen in quick ways. We might not even notice them. We use our feelings and how we talk to others.

These two ways work together. A researcher must follow big rules. They must also care for the person in front of them.

In medicine, doctors use both. They think about big rules for life. They also watch a patient's face. They listen to a person's voice. They look at how a patient sits. They also think about a family's values. Small moments add up to make our big world.
