Rights

society Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Rights are rules about what is fair. They tell us what people are allowed to do. They also say what people are owed.

Some people believe in natural rights. These rights come from nature or a god. They are for all people in the world. They cannot be taken away.

Other rights are legal rights. These come from the laws of a group. For example, a citizen might have the right to vote.

There are also different ways to look at rights. A claim right means someone else must do something for you. A liberty right is just a freedom to do something. For example, free speech is a liberty. It means you are allowed to speak.

Rights can belong to one person. They can also belong to a whole group. Some think a group of soldiers acts as one body. This group might have its own rights.
