Dignity is the idea that every person has worth.

It means people deserve respect just for being themselves. This is a right for all people. Many big groups use this idea. For example, the United Nations has a famous list of rights. This list says all people are born free and equal.

Philosophers have thought about dignity for a long time. Immanuel Kant was one thinker. He believed dignity comes from our ability to make choices. This is often called free will. Other thinkers like Alan Gewirth said dignity means we should help each other. They thought we must work to make sure everyone is well.

Sometimes, dignity is hurt. This can happen through humiliation. Humiliation is when someone is treated in a way that makes them feel small. It can also happen through dehumanization. This is when people are treated like animals instead of humans. Being very poor can also hurt dignity. Not having enough food or clean water can be very hard. Even having no place to go to the bathroom is seen as an affront to dignity. People try to protect these rights through laws and kindness.
