Dignity is the idea that every person deserves respect and value.

It is a concept used in law, politics, and ethics. Many people believe this respect is a right that everyone is born with. This idea is linked to the Enlightenment era and its focus on rights. In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was created. This document states that all humans are born free and equal in dignity. It says people have reason and conscience to guide them. We should treat one another with a spirit of brotherhood.

There are many ways that dignity can be harmed or violated. One way is through humiliation, which makes a person feel less worthy. Another way is called objectification, where a person is used as a tool. This means treating someone as a means to reach a goal instead of an end. Degradation also hurts dignity by lowering the perceived value of humans. This can happen even if a person gives their consent. Dehumanization is another serious issue where people are treated like animals. This has happened during historical events like the Holocaust and in Rwanda.

Living conditions can also impact a person's sense of dignity. Extreme poverty can lead to humiliation and a loss of self-respect. For example, being forced to eat food from garbage is a violation. Not having access to clean toilets is also a major problem. About 1 billion people in the world lack proper sanitation. The United Nations has called this a blow to personal dignity. In India, some people perform manual scavenging of human waste. This job is often done by people from lower castes.

Philosophers have studied this idea for many centuries. Pico della Mirandola was a thinker during the Renaissance. He wrote about the dignity of man and the glory of angels. Later, Immanuel Kant became a very important figure in the 18th century. He believed that dignity comes from our ability to make choices. This ability is often called free will or human agency. Kant argued that morality is what gives humans their dignity. He believed humans should be treated as ends in themselves.

Other thinkers have added their own views to the discussion. Alan Gewirth believed that dignity creates a duty to help others. He felt we must actively assist people in staying well. Mortimer Adler explored if all humans are truly equal. He argued that humans are a distinct class from animals. Some people, like Dan Egonsson, suggest dignity requires being both human and alive. Others, like Arthur Schopenhauer, thought dignity was based on the opinions of others. These different ideas show how much people wonder about worth.
