Biocentrism (ethics)

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Some people hold a special view called biocentrism. This idea says all living things have equal value. It means plants and animals have a right to live. They are not just here for humans to use.

Biocentrism has four main pillars. First, humans are members of a big Earth community. Second, all species depend on each other. Third, every living thing works toward its own good. Fourth, humans are not better than other species. This last part is very important to many.

Many thinkers have shared these ideas. Albert Schweitzer spoke about a reverence for life. Paul W. Taylor wrote about respect for nature. He said every organism has its own purpose. Even Charles Darwin helped people see these links. He showed how all life is connected through nature.

Religions also teach about the value of life. In Islam, people believe all creation belongs to God. In Hinduism, people believe all living things have souls. They practice non-violence to show respect. Some places even use laws to protect nature. This helps keep the Earth healthy for everyone.
