Anthropocentrism

philosophy religion Maturity 13-18 Next article →

Some people believe that humans are the most important part of Earth. This idea is called anthropocentrism. It means seeing humans as the center of everything. People with this view may see nature as separate from us. They might see plants and animals as things for humans to use.

There are different ways to think about this. Some thinkers say this view causes problems for our planet. They believe it makes humans want to rule over nature. However, others say it is helpful. They argue we must keep the world healthy so humans can thrive. They call this a "shallow" view if it only thinks about the short term.

Children often show this way of thinking. They might think an insect or a flower acts like a person. Studies show that children in cities may think this way more than children in the country. Some groups, like the Wichí people, do not think this way. They see all living things as part of a connected world.

Many religions also talk about this. Some people use holy books to say humans have a special role. Other scholars, like Moses Maimonides, argued that humans are not the center of the world. He said we are just a small part of it.
