Walter Christaller was a geographer from Germany. He was born in 1893. He spent his life studying how towns and cities work. He wanted to know how they fit together. He created a famous idea called central place theory. This theory looks at cities as a system. It shows how towns relate to each other. He first wrote about this in 1933.

During the Second World War, Christaller worked for the government. He helped make plans for lands in Poland and Czechoslovakia. He used his theory to guide these plans. This was a very serious time in history.

After the war, he stayed active in politics. He also studied tourism geography. This is the study of travel and fun places. In 1950, he helped start a group for map experts. This group is called the German Association of Applied Geography. His ideas are still used in Germany today. They help decide where town lines and borders go. He died in 1969 in West Germany.
