He was born in Quedlinburg in 1779. He is known as a founder of modern geography. This means he helped make it a real science. He worked with another man named Alexander von Humboldt.

Ritter spent much of his life in Berlin. He taught at the University of Berlin for many years. He also started the Berlin Geographical Society in 1828. He wrote a massive set of books called "Erdkunde." This work had 21 volumes. It was one of the biggest books ever written by one person.

He wanted to show how the Earth works as one big system. He studied how land, water, and air affect people. He was very interested in Africa and Asia. Ritter also spoke out against the slave trade. He wanted to help stop it in Germany.

His work was so important that people named a mountain range after him. The Ritter Range is in California. He died in Berlin in 1859. His ideas still help us study our world today.
