Political geography

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Political geography is a way to study the world. It looks at how people and land work together. This study looks at how political processes change things. It also looks at how the shape of the land affects politics. Most experts look at three different levels. They study the whole world first. Then they study single states or countries. Finally, they study small local areas.

This helps us see how power moves through space.

In the past, thinkers focused on land and power. They wanted to know how physical geography changed history. Friedrich Ratzel was a German geographer in the late 1800s. In 1897, he wrote a book called Politische Geographie. He said a nation was like a living thing. He believed nations needed space to grow. This idea was called Lebensraum. Later, this idea was used to justify unfair actions in Germany.

It was a very difficult time in history.

Another thinker was Halford Mackinder from Britain. In 1904, he shared his Heartland Theory. He believed that land power was becoming more important than sea power. He said the heart of the world was in Euro-Asia. He thought whoever controlled this area would control the world. This idea influenced many leaders for a long time. It even played a part in the Cold War. It helped leaders decide where to put buffer states in Europe.

These states were meant to keep big powers apart.

For a while, this field of study became very quiet. Some people even said it was a dead subject in 1968. But things changed in the late 1970s. The field had a rebirth or a renaissance. New journals were started to share new ideas. Experts began using math and science to study space. Ron J. Johnston studied how people vote in 1979. Robert Sack studied how people use land in 1986. Henry Bakis studied how phones and computers changed things in 1987.

The study became very active again.

Today, political geography is a very busy subject. It looks at many new things in our modern world. Experts study how the internet and social media affect power. They also look at green politics and the environment. They want to know if governments can solve planet problems. They study how countries form groups like the European Union. They also look at how people treat former colonies. It is a way to understand how our world stays connected.
