He was a political scientist, a geographer, and a politician. He is most famous for creating the word "geopolitics." This is a way to study how a country's land affects its power. He wanted to understand how the world actually works. He believed that old ways of studying politics were not enough. This new way of thinking changed how people viewed the world. His ideas helped build a new field of study.

Kjellén had a very special way of looking at countries. He used a metaphor to explain how they work. He compared a state to an organism, which is a living thing. He did not mean a country is literally alive. He just thought it was the best way to understand it. He believed a state has its own forces that make it grow. These forces help a state rise, change, and even die. This helped make political science feel more like a real science.

Kjellén spent many years studying and teaching at universities. He was born in Torsö in 1864. He went to Uppsala University in 1880. He earned his PhD there in 1891. Later, he taught at the University of Gothenburg. In 1901, he became a professor of political science and statistics. In 1916, he received a very special job at Uppsala. This was called the Skyttean professorship. He worked hard to make political studies much broader.

He was also a very busy leader in Sweden. Kjellén served in the Swedish Parliament for many years. He was in the Second Chamber from 1905 to 1908. He was in the First Chamber from 1911 to 1917. He was a member of a group called the "Young Right." This group wanted to make reforms in the country. He also spoke up for Sweden during arguments with Norway. He even worked to make the military stronger.

Kjellén wrote many books and articles during his life. One of his most famous books was "The Great Powers." He first published it in 1905. He later wrote "The State as a Life-form" in 1916. He also wrote about the history of Sweden. His ideas about nations were very unique. He believed nations grew slowly through history. He even hoped that different nations might one day join together. Kjellén died in 1922 from heart disease in Uppsala.
