Friedrich Ratzel was a very important German scholar. He changed how we study the world and its people. He was born on August 30, 1844. His father worked for the Grand Duke of Baden. Ratzel spent six years in high school in Karlsruhe. After that, he worked as an apprentice in medicine shops. He studied zoology, which is the study of animals. He went to universities in Heidelberg, Jena, and Berlin. He finished his studies in 1868.

His career changed because of his many travels. At first, he was a scientist who studied animals. Then, he began to write about the land. He traveled through the Mediterranean and wrote letters. These letters helped him get a job as a reporter. He traveled for the Kölnische Zeitung newspaper. His most famous trip was to North America and Cuba. This trip lasted from 1874 to 1875. He visited many large cities during this time. He saw New York, Boston, and San Francisco. He also visited Philadelphia, Washington, and New Orleans.

Ratzel became a famous teacher at several universities. He first taught in Munich. He started as a lecturer and became a full professor in 1880. Later, he moved to Leipzig University in 1886. Many people came to hear his lectures. One famous student was Ellen Churchill Semple. Another was Martha Krug-Genthe, the first woman to get a geography doctorate. He wrote many books during his time as a professor. One big book was called Anthropogeographie. He worked on this huge project from 1872 to 1899.

He had many big ideas about how nations work. He wrote a book called Politische Geographie in 1897. In this book, he talked about space and power. He used the word Lebensraum to mean living space. He thought strong nations would naturally expand into new areas. He believed this was a natural thing for a strong state to do. His ideas were sometimes used in bad ways by others later. He also wrote about sea power and trade. He thought having a strong navy helped a country grow.

Ratzel's life was full of many different roles. He was a student, a reporter, and a soldier. He joined the Prussian army in 1870. He was wounded twice during the Franco-Prussian War. He spent his life looking for patterns in the world. He looked at how the Earth shapes human life. He died on August 9, 1904, in Ammerland, Germany.
