This field looks at how people and places connect. It does not just look at mountains or rivers. Instead, it looks at how people live within those spaces. It explores how different groups of people create their own ways of life. Geographers want to understand the patterns of human life across the Earth.

In the past, some thinkers had a very simple idea. They believed in environmental determinism. This theory said the land controlled how people lived. It suggested that the environment decided everything about a society.

Cultural geography grew as a way to move past this idea. It focuses on the cultural landscape. This is what happens when humans and nature interact. People grow out of their local land. At the same time, people change the land to fit their needs.

This way of thinking changed because of important people. Carl O. Sauer is called the father of cultural geography. He worked at the University of California, Berkeley. He believed the landscape was the most important thing to study. For a long time, many writers in this field were from America. Later, a man named Richard Hartshorne challenged these ideas. He wanted more systematic ways to study how places vary. This led to many new ways of looking at the world.

Today, the field is much larger and more complex. Since the 1980s, a "new cultural geography" has emerged. It uses many different ideas to explain the world.

Experts now study many specific topics. They look at how music travels between places. They study how people move, which is called immigration or emigration. They even look at how children experience the world. Some researchers study how power works in different spaces. They want to see how identity is shaped by where we live.

There is no single definition for culture in this study. Geographers use many tools to help them understand it. They borrow ideas from subjects like sociology and anthropology. They also use ideas from feminism and literary theory. Some experts look at how people feel about a specific place. This is often called a "sense of place." By using all these different views, they can see a fuller picture. They help us understand how our world is made by both nature and people.
