Long ago, some thinkers had a simple idea. They thought the land controlled how people lived. This was called environmental determinism. But new ideas changed this view. A man named Carl Sauer led the change. He was at the University of California, Berkeley. He is called the father of cultural geography.

Sauer looked at the landscape. He saw that people and land work together. People grow from their land. But people also change the land. This mix is called a cultural landscape.
