Regional geography

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Regional geography is a way to study the world.

This study looks at one specific area. It looks at how nature and people work together there. This can be a single country or a whole continent. It can also be a type of land. For example, someone might study mountain areas or coastal regions.

This way of thinking began in German-speaking countries. It has two main parts. One part studies specific places like countries. The other part studies types of landscapes.

Many famous people used this method. Alfred Hettner was a thinker in Germany. Paul Vidal de la Blache lived in France. Richard Hartshorne was in the United States.

Some people have criticized this way of study. They say it lacks a strong theory. In the 1950s, new ideas changed how many people studied geography. Still, many schools teach it today. They use it to learn about the major regions of our world. The map shows how these regions can be seen.
