It can be a piece of land or a part of the ocean. Regions help us study our big world.

Some regions are made by nature. These are called physical regions. They might have big mountains or many trees. They can also be based on the soil or the weather.

Other regions are made by people. These are called human regions. Some are political regions. These have clear borders, like a country or a state. Other human regions are based on culture or history.

Some areas are known for what people do there. A tourism region is a place made for trips. People might visit Tuscany in Italy for its culture. Other regions are known for natural resources. For example, some places are known for finding coal or oil.

Regions can be very big or very small. The largest land regions are called continents. The largest water regions are called oceans.
