A region is a special part of the Earth's surface. You might hear people call them areas, zones, or territories.

These parts of the world are divided in different ways. Some are split by natural things like mountains or rivers. Others are split by how people live and use the land. Most regions do not have perfect, sharp lines for borders. Instead, their edges can be fuzzy or change over time. Only some human regions, like countries, have borders fixed by law.

Nature creates many types of regions on our planet. Physical geography looks at regions made by the land itself. These might be based on mountain ranges or different types of soil. Some regions are defined by water, like a drainage basin. There are even regions in the sky called atmospheric regions. You can find regions in the oceans, too. Scientists also study ecoregions and bioregions to understand nature. These help us see how living things share a space.

People also create regions through their history and culture. Historical geography studies how these places change over many years. For example, a person named D. W. Meinig studied American history. He looked at areas like the Northwest European Atlantic Protestant Region. He also described the Great Fishery near Newfoundland. These historical areas often do not follow strict political lines. They are based on how people moved and lived. This helps us understand the story of a place.

Some regions are built around specific jobs or activities. A natural resource region is a place known for what it holds. For instance, some areas are famous for finding coal. The Coal Region of Pennsylvania is a well-known example. There are also regions made for travelers to visit. These are called tourism regions. Governments might name an area like Tuscany in Italy to attract visitors. They use these names to suggest a special experience. This makes it easier for people to plan trips.

Finally, regions help us organize how we rule and live. Political geography studies regions like states or provinces. Some groups, like the European Union, are large political regions. Even religions can have regions, such as the Muslim world. Some churches divide their areas into smaller parts like parishes. The word region comes from a Latin word meaning to rule. Many countries, like Chile and France, use the word officially. This helps them manage their land and people more easily.
