Geopolitics is a way to study how the Earth's physical features affect politics. It looks at how land, water, and natural resources change how countries act toward each other. Experts use geography to try to understand and predict how nations will behave. They look at many different things like climate and the shape of the land. They also study how many people live in an area and what resources they have. This helps people understand the power a country holds in its space.

One way to study this is by looking at the sea. Alfred Mahan was a thinker who believed the sea was vital for a nation. He said that being great often meant having a strong navy. To have sea power, a nation needs a good location and a long coastline. It also needs plenty of natural resources and a helpful climate. A large population is needed to defend the land. Finally, the government must want to lead on the ocean. Mahan focused on the Central Zone of Asia to show these ideas.

Other thinkers looked at how large pieces of land connect. Nicholas Spykman was a follower and a critic of earlier ideas. He studied the "Rimland," which is a strip of land near the sea. This area sits between the "Heartland" and the ocean. Spykman believed that whoever rules the Rimland also rules Eurasia. Eurasia is a massive group of lands that holds much power. He thought the United States should support Rimland states to keep things balanced. This idea helped shape how the U.S. acted during the Cold War.

History shows that many people have tried to map these powers. Emil Reich was one of the first to use the term in English. He published a book called Foundations of Modern Europe in 1904. Later, Homer Lea wrote about threats to the Anglo-Saxon race in 1912. He worried about the growth of powers like Germany and Russia. Edmund Walsh also made important changes to these studies. He started a school at Georgetown University in 1919. He wanted to create a new way to study international relations in America.

Modern leaders still use these ideas to keep the world stable. Henry Kissinger and Zbigniew Brzezinski were two important advisors. They argued that the United States must stay involved in Eurasia. They saw Eurasia as a giant chessboard where power is constantly shifting. Brzezinski wrote a book called The Grand Chessboard to explain this. He believed the U.S. should act as a judge to keep balance. The goal is to stop one single power from ruling the whole area. This helps prevent one nation from becoming too strong for others to resist.
