Foreign policy

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Foreign policy is a set of plans for how a country acts with others. These plans help a state interact with other nations and unions. It is also known as external policy. A country uses these strategies to reach many different goals. Some goals are about staying safe and secure. Other goals focus on helping the economy grow. A country might also provide help to people in need.

There are many ways a country carries out its policy. One way is through defense and security. States might form military alliances to stop potential attacks. They can also use soft power to deal with threats. Another way is through economic interests. Countries make trade agreements to help their businesses. They also manage how they import and export goods. Some states use foreign aid to support other nations.

History shows how these relationships have changed over time. In the 18th century, diplomacy was often broken into small pieces. People called these small, temporary issues "affairs." Domestic issues like peasant riots were called civil affairs. Foreign affairs meant managing short-term problems outside a country. Today, these departments manage long-term relations instead. They handle day-to-day tasks between states.

Many factors change how a country makes its decisions. A country's power level matters a great deal. Superpowers can exert influence all across the world. Small powers have fewer military and economic resources. Because of this, small states often join international groups. The type of government also plays a big role. In a democracy, public opinion can affect policy. In a dictatorship, the leader makes most of the choices.

Experts study these interactions to help leaders understand the world. These experts work in places called think tanks. They provide research and analysis for policy decisions. Some groups study foreign policy specifically to help. The Council on Foreign Relations is in the United States. Chatham House is a group located in the United Kingdom. These organizations help people understand why states act the way they do.
