Détente is a special word used in politics. It describes a time when relations between countries become less tense. Instead of fighting, leaders use talking to solve their problems. The term first appeared around 1912. That was when France and Germany tried to reduce their own tensions. During the Cold War, the word became very famous. It described a period where the United States and the Soviet Union tried to be more peaceful.

This period of détente worked through many different steps. First, leaders used diplomacy to talk about difficult subjects. They held big meetings called summits to discuss peace. They also signed treaties to set rules for behavior. These rules often focused on limiting weapons. Some agreements were about nuclear arms. Other agreements were about human rights or how countries trade.

Many important things happened during this era. In 1969, U.S. President Richard Nixon began using détente as a main policy. He wanted to avoid more conflict with the Eastern Bloc. In 1972, Nixon and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev signed the SALT I treaty. This treaty put limits on nuclear weapons. In 1975, many nations met for the Helsinki Accords. This was a large group of agreements about politics and human rights.

Even in space, people found ways to work together. In July 1975, the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project took place. This was the first international space mission. An American spacecraft and a Soviet spacecraft joined together in orbit. This mission helped end the Space Race. It showed that the two superpowers could cooperate on science.

However, the peace did not last forever. Tensions grew again after the Soviet Union moved into Afghanistan in 1979. This led the U.S. to boycott the 1980 Moscow Olympics. When Ronald Reagan became president in 1980, he felt the old ways were not working. He believed the Soviet Union used détente to help itself. Later, a second period of détente began with Mikhail Gorbachev. This new period helped leaders talk about arms reduction until 1991.
