Social history

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some people study the past in a new way. This is called social history. For a long time, history focused on "Great Men." These were powerful leaders and kings. People mostly wrote about wars and big deals between nations.

In the 1960s, things began to change. Historians wanted to see how regular people lived. They called this "history from below." They believed that change comes from all people in a society. It does not just come from one leader.

A man named E. P. Thompson was very important. He wrote about the working class in England. He helped make this way of study popular. In the United States, people sometimes call this "history from the bottom-up."

Social historians use many tools to learn. They use math to study trends. They also use oral history. This means they listen to stories from people. This helps them find voices that were lost. Today, many teachers in the U.S. and Britain study this way. They want to show the full story of our world.
