history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Urban history is the study of cities and towns. It looks at how they grow and change. This growth is called urbanization. Experts use many tools to study cities. They look at buildings and old objects. They also study how people live and work together.

Many scholars focus on the metropolis. A metropolis is a very large city. Some experts study small towns instead. Small towns can be easier to study. This is because researchers can use census data. Census data is a list of people and facts. This helps them see the whole population.

In Great Britain, history of cities grew in the 1960s. People studied the health and culture of towns. They also looked at how groups like women and migrants lived. In the United States, historians study many types of cities. They study port cities on the coast. They also study cities built near railroads. Some even write urban biographies. These tell the story of one city. They look at its leaders and its neighborhoods. This helps us understand our world.
