Johann Gustav Droysen was a famous German historian. He was born in 1808. His father was a church leader in the army. As a boy, Johann saw wars near his home. This made him love the land of Prussia.

Johann studied very hard. He taught at many schools and universities. He wrote a famous book about Alexander the Great. This book looked at how great leaders use power. He also made up the word "Hellenistic." This word describes a time after Alexander's rule.

Johann also cared about politics. He wanted to help his people. He worked to help the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. He also joined a group called the Frankfurt Parliament. He believed Prussia should lead all German lands.

Later, Johann spent his time writing about Prussia. He wrote many volumes about its politics. One book about a leader named Count Yorck was very good. He died in Berlin in 1884. His sons also became writers. They wrote books about history too.
