He was born in Hamburg in 1850. He studied history in many cities. These cities were Berlin, Heidelberg, and Straßburg. He earned two doctor degrees in Straßburg. Later, he studied in Göttingen.

Bernheim became a teacher at many universities. He taught at the University of Bonn. He also taught at the University of Greifswald. In 1889, he became a full professor there. He even led the whole university for a time. He wrote an important book about how to study history.

Later, life became very unfair for him. During the Nazi era, new laws hurt him. He was Jewish, so he lost his citizenship. He was not allowed to teach his students. Many scientists tried to help him. They asked the leaders to let him keep his citizenship. This worked for a short time. It helped him avoid being sent away in 1940. Bernheim died in 1942. People in Greifswald still honor him. They named a street after him. They also put a plaque on his old house.
