He is often called the "father of experimental psychology." This is because he helped turn the study of the mind into a real science. Before his time, people studied the mind through philosophy or biology. Wundt wanted to use experiments to find new answers. He was the first person to call himself a psychologist.

To study the mind, Wundt used a special way of working. He set up a laboratory to run many different tests.

He used many tools to see how people react to things. He used timers, pendulums, and even electrical devices. One tool he used was a tachistoscope to show images very fast. He also used sensory mapping devices to study how we feel the world. By using these tools, he could measure how the mind works step by step.

This lab was located at the University of Leipzig. It eventually grew to include eleven different rooms. Wundt also started the first journals to share research findings. These were called Philosophische Studien and Psychologische Studien. He was a very successful teacher during his career. He helped 185 students earn their doctoral degrees. Many of these students, including 70 foreigners, became famous scientists themselves.
