He was a pioneer in a field called econometrics. This field uses math to study how money and trade work. He is often called one of the founding fathers of this subject. Tinbergen wanted to understand how to make a society work well. He spent his life looking for the best way to share wealth. His work helped people understand how big economies function. Many leaders still look to his ideas today.

Tinbergen used special math tools called dynamic models. These models help people see how economic things change over time. He created a way to look at targets and instruments. A target is a goal a leader wants to reach. An instrument is a tool a leader can control to hit that goal. For example, a central bank might want to hit an inflation target. They use interest rates as an instrument to reach it. This way of thinking is still used by banks all over the world.

His journey began in the early 1900s. He was born on April 12, 1903. He studied math and physics at the University of Leiden. Between 1921 and 1925, he talked with famous scientists like Albert Einstein. In 1929, he finished his PhD thesis. This work combined math, physics, and economics. He later worked for the Dutch statistical office for many years. He also served as a consultant for the League of Nations.

He helped many countries, including Turkey, Venezuela, and Pakistan.

His family was full of very smart people. His brother Nikolaas won a Nobel Prize for studying animal behavior. His other brother Luuk was a famous expert on birds. Jan and Nikolaas are the only brothers to both win Nobel Prizes. People also remember the "Tinbergen Norm." This is an idea about how much income should be shared. It suggests that the gap between rich and poor should not be too large. His ideas about fairness continue to shape our world.
