He was born in 's-Graveland, Netherlands, in 1910. He spent his life studying how to use things wisely. This is often called the theory of resource allocation. Resources can be tools, money, or even food. Koopmans found ways to use these things in the best way. His smart ideas helped people understand how to make systems work well. This work is very important for how our world functions today.

His journey with math began at Utrecht University. He started his studies there when he was seventeen years old. At first, he focused on mathematics. In 1930, he changed his focus to theoretical physics. Later, he met a man named Jan Tinbergen in Amsterdam. Tinbergen was a winner of a Nobel Prize in Economics. Under Tinbergen, Koopmans studied mathematical economics, statistics, and econometrics. He earned his PhD from Leiden University in 1936. His thesis was about how to look at economic data over time.

In 1940, Koopmans moved to the United States. He worked for the government in Washington, D.C. There, he studied the best paths for moving goods. This is known as the economics of transportation. He then moved to Chicago to join the Cowles Commission. He became a director of this research group in 1948. During the 1950s, some people at the University of Chicago disagreed with the group. Because of this, Koopmans moved the Cowles Foundation to Yale University in 1955.

Koopmans did many great things in science. He worked on the Hartree-Fock theory in quantum chemistry. This led to a famous idea called the Koopmans theorem. In 1975, he reached a very big goal. He won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He shared this prize with Leonid Kantorovich. They were honored for their work on how to use resources efficiently. They studied how inputs and outputs in production affect prices. This helped people understand the link between making things and their cost.

Koopmans had a family of his own. He married Truus Wanningen in 1936. They had three children named Henry, Anne, and Helen. His brother was a man named Jan Koopmans. Jan was a theologian who wrote a pamphlet in 1940. This paper warned people about the dangers facing Jewish people in the Netherlands. During a hard time in history, Jan worked to speak the truth. Tjalling's life was full of big ideas and important changes.
