He was born in France in 1921. He studied both math and economics. Economics is the study of how people use money and goods. Debreu wanted to see how these things fit together perfectly. He used math to find the hidden patterns in how markets work. His work helped people understand how prices and goods balance out.

Debreu looked at how markets reach a steady state. This balance is called an equilibrium. He used special math tools to prove this could happen. In 1954, he wrote a famous paper with Kenneth Arrow. They showed how a competitive economy finds its balance. This paper used new math methods to explain the idea. He also studied how people make choices when they are not sure about the future. He called these "contingent commodities," which are like promises to deliver goods later.

His life began in France during a very difficult time. He lost his parents when he was young. During World War II, he lived in places like Ambert and Grenoble. In 1941, he went to the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. When the war grew intense in 1944, he joined the French army. He served in Algeria and then in Germany. After the war ended in 1945, he began his journey into economics.

Debreu traveled many places to share his ideas. He went to the United States on a fellowship in 1948. He worked at the University of Chicago for five years. In 1955, he taught at Yale University. Later, he moved to the University of California, Berkeley. He taught there from 1962 until 1991. He even visited universities in places like Cambridge and Bonn. He was a very busy and respected teacher.

Many people honored his amazing work throughout his life. In 1959, he published his most important book. It was called "The Theory of Value." This book is a classic in the study of economics. In 1976, he received the French Legion of Honour. The biggest honor came in 1983. He won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

He died in Paris on New Year's Eve in 2004.
