Modern critics also note that Malthus disregarded the power of technology. For example, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have helped increase food yields. His mathematical model was also limited because it was based specifically on the conditions in England. In other regions, such as Australia, food production can actually exceed population growth. Additionally, social changes regarding family size and economic restrictions can lower birth rates. While his specific predictions were often incorrect, Malthus remains a central figure in how we understand the connection between resources and human growth.
