On Liberty

The book *On Liberty* is a very famous essay about freedom. It was published in 1859 by an English thinker named John Stuart Mill. He worked on this book with his wife, Harriet Taylor Mill. They wanted to look at how people and governments should live together. Mill believed that being an individual is very important for finding happiness. He thought that being yourself helps people reach higher levels of joy.

This book is still used by many people today to think about politics. It is even given to the leader of the British Liberal Democrats as a symbol of their job.

Mill had a specific way of looking at how power works. He believed there is a struggle between authority and liberty. In the past, small groups often had to follow one strong leader. As time went on, people began to rule themselves through democracy. However, Mill warned that democracy has a hidden danger. He called this the "tyranny of the majority." This happens when most people use their power to force their views on a small group.

Mill thought this was even harder to fight than a single ruler. It is difficult to protect yourself against the feelings of the whole crowd.

To prevent this, Mill proposed a single main rule for freedom. He said the only reason to stop someone is to prevent harm to others. This means a person is the boss of their own mind and body. You should be free to think and speak however you want. This includes the freedom to have your own tastes and to join groups.

Mill believed that even if an opinion is wrong, we should not silence it. He said that all ideas—true, partly true, or false—help us learn. If we stop people from speaking, we might lose the truth forever.

Writing this book was a long and personal journey for Mill. He first thought of the idea in 1854 as a short essay. He and Harriet Taylor Mill worked on it for many years. They changed and corrected the writing together. Mill said the book was a joint work by both of them.

Sadly, Harriet died in 1858, just before the book was finished. Mill published it in 1859 to honor her memory. In 2022, experts used special tools to show that she likely wrote many parts of it. Now, some new editions even list her as a co-author.

Mill's ideas connect to how we live in modern societies. He believed that diversity and creativity come from being an individual. If everyone acts the same, society might stop growing. He also said that people should make rules they would like even if they were in the minority. This keeps things fair for everyone in a community.

His work helped shape many ideas about human rights. Even today, people still debate the limits of what a government can do. We are still learning how to balance our own freedom with the needs of others.
