On Liberty

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

John Stuart Mill was a thinker from England. In 1859, he published a book called On Liberty. He wrote it with his wife, Harriet Taylor Mill. Mill wanted to study how people and governments live together. He believed people should have freedom. He thought being an individual helps people find joy.

Mill warned about a big problem. He called it the "tyranny of the majority." This happens when most people force their ideas on others. Even in a democracy, the many can be unfair to the few. Mill said we should never stop people from sharing ideas. Some ideas are false, and some are true. We need both to learn the truth.

He had one main rule for freedom. A person should be free to do what they want. The only time a government can stop them is to prevent harm to others. You are the boss of your own mind and body. This rule helps keep society fair. Mill believed that letting people be themselves helps the whole world. His ideas are still very important today.
