Epictetus
Epictetus

He was born a slave in Phrygia. He lived in Rome for a long time. His master allowed him to study philosophy. He studied under a teacher named Musonius Rufus. Later, Epictetus gained his freedom. He began to teach his own ideas.

One day, the Roman emperor told all thinkers to leave Rome. Epictetus moved to Nicopolis in Greece. He started a school there. He taught that philosophy is a way to live. He said we cannot control what happens around us. We should accept these things calmly. However, we can control our own actions. We do this through self-discipline.

Epictetus did not write books himself. His student, Arrian, wrote down his many lessons. These writings are called the Discourses and the Enchiridion. These books helped many people. Even the emperor Marcus Aurelius admired him. Many other great thinkers read his work too. He lived a very simple life with few things.
