Gurdjieff believed that most people live in a state of "waking sleep." He thought people are not truly aware of themselves. He taught that we can wake up to a higher state. This helps us find our true purpose. One student called his teaching the "Fourth Way."

George grew up in a city called Alexandropol. His father was a Greek man who owned many sheep and cattle. George spoke many languages. He knew Armenian, Greek, Russian, and Turkish. He traveled to many places like Egypt, India, and Tibet. He said he looked for a hidden truth. He even wrote a book called "Meetings with Remarkable Men."

After he died in 1949, many groups formed to keep his ideas alive. Some of these groups are in France, the USA, the UK, and Venezuela. These groups help people study his work today.
